A basement renovation will add value to your home and give you more usable square footage. Most basements are used for storage space, but there are many options for utilizing the space. A home movie theater or mother-in-law suite is the most common basement remodel request. Adding a wet bar for adult entertainment and maybe creating a children's room for toys and game time. The limits to a basement renovation are based on your imagination. We recommend keeping your renovation to a neutral theme and child-friendly if you plan to sell your house in the near future.
Most basements will have a poured concrete floor, and it may be wise to leave this bare in areas you intend to use as storage. However, you may want to consider a more comfortable option for areas you will frequent and use. Sub-flooring is a common application, but it will be cold as it lays directly on the concrete. Basements require a special sub-flooring that is mold resistant and provide drainage for moisture that accumulates. We suggest painting, rubber flooring, or using epoxy if the area will see consistent hard use. Tile is a very decorative solution. Wood flooring is the most luxurious finish we recommend.
Sub-flooring is not required, but it does have significant advantages. Dampness control and temperature control. Moisture is unavoidable and must be controlled to prevent mold and mildew. Subfloor provides for mini joists to be installed that allow for proper drainage. Subfloor also insulates your flooring from the cold concrete and will make for a more enjoyable experience in the basement. We love our slippers like anyone else, but cold feet are a no-go for us.
Plan the layout first and foremost. Understand each area's intended use and where you want furniture or electronics to be installed. If a bedroom is going to be installed, make sure it is not below a frequently traveled part of the house where foot noise will interrupt anyone's sleep. Have a plan of travel to and from the entertainment zone. No one likes having their view obstructed during the movie; plan for easy access to the couch(s). Consider headroom and make sure there will be enough to move about comfortably, especially if you plan to install doorways. Make sure there is adequate drainage and the sump pump(s) are fully operational. Last, insulate any pipes thoroughly to prevent heat loss or cold water pipes from dripping condensation on the party.
